Fr. Michael Gutgsell, the eldest of ten children, was born in Kansas City, Missouri. His father accepted a new job, and the family moved to Omaha.
He entered the minor seminary in 1962, studying under the Benedictine Fathers at Elkhorn, Nebraska. He continued his studies in Saint Paul, Minnesota at the College of Saint Thomas and The Saint Paul Seminary and was ordained in May 1974.
Father Gutgsell served in a large Omaha parish before moving to Columbus, Nebraska for a full-time teaching assignment in a junior-senior high school and weekend parish ministry.
In 1981, he began studies in Canon Law at The Catholic University of America, returning to Omaha in 1983 to begin duties at the Archbishop’s Office in the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal.
In January 1994, Father Gutgsell was appointed Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Omaha. In 1998, he also assumed the duties of the Moderator of the Curia. In 2003, he was named pastor of Saint John the Baptist Parish in Washington County, Nebraska and retained the duties of the Moderator of the Curia.
Fr. Gutgsell was named full-time pastor of Saint Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha, Nebraska in mid-June 2005. During this time, Father resumed duties at the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal as Defender of the Bond.
July 1, 2017, Father Gutgsell was assigned pastor of Saint Joseph Parish, Springfield, Nebraska.
